Record your screen on Windows 11 – with audio, microphone and camera

A good screen recording starts before pressing Record. Capture source, frame rate, codec, microphone, system audio and camera should be configured so that the result fits its purpose and can be stored locally and reliably.

Whole screen or individual window?

For tutorials and software demonstrations, an individual window is often cleaner because only the relevant application is recorded. For presentations, pen workflows or sessions that move between applications, full-screen capture can be more suitable.

Before recording, check whether notifications, private information or unrelated windows could become visible.

Microphone & system audio

Control audio sources independently.

Microphone and system audio serve different purposes and should be enabled and levelled separately. In explanatory videos, clear speech is usually more important than loud system audio.

Microphone

Check the input device and level before recording. Very low levels produce quiet speech; excessive levels can introduce distortion.

System audio

Capture system audio only when it contributes to the content. Speech ducking can reduce it automatically while you are speaking.

Camera overlay

Combine webcam and screen recording without blocking the content.

A camera can add presence but should not cover the material being demonstrated. A compact overlay in a suitable corner is often enough for tutorials and teaching.

Position: keep important menus and subtitles clear.
Size: as small as possible, as large as necessary for facial expression and direct address.
Crop and zoom: reduce distracting parts of the camera frame.
Mirroring: choose according to the camera image and presentation effect.
Background blur: can make the local camera background visually calmer.

Frame rate & codec

30 or 60 FPS, H.264 or HEVC?

30 FPS is sufficient for many presentations, lectures and standard software tutorials. 60 FPS can look smoother for fast pointer movement, animation or detailed pen interaction, but it needs more processing power and can create larger files.

H.264 is broadly compatible. HEVC can provide more efficient compression but depends on suitable hardware and playback environments. Practical resolution always depends on the source, graphics/video hardware and selected codec.

Recording workflow

Countdown, pause and shortcuts reduce avoidable errors.

A short countdown prevents rushed starts. Pause/resume helps with interruptions, and global shortcuts are useful when the recorder interface should remain out of the foreground during capture.

Before recording: test the capture source, save location, microphone, system audio and camera once. A short test clip is usually faster than fixing a long failed recording.

Local recording

Save MP4 locally and reduce unnecessary cloud dependencies.

With local desktop recording, the recording itself remains on the computer. This is particularly relevant for internal presentations, teaching material or software demonstrations where unnecessary cloud transfer is not desired.
